Hello, my name’s Fiona and I’m Libby’s Puppy Walker, which means she’ll be living with me for her first year before heading off to training school.
I’ve been puppy walking for Guide Dogs for over 30 years now and Libby is puppy number 38! She’s settling in really well and we’ve been on all sorts of adventures since she joined me at seven weeks old.
Libby and I have been all over the country recently. We drove up to Loughborough to meet Libby Clegg, the Paralympic athlete and guide dog owner Libby is named after. She was lovely, and my Libby was so good the whole time. There were no problems in the car, even after we got stuck in traffic on the way back! Libby’s also been on buses and trains with no problems at all, which is a great start. We’re off to Greenwich on a ferry next week too which is exciting. We’ll be going with a group of other Puppy Walkers, so I’m sure Libby will be absolutely fine.
Like most golden retrievers, Libby is very tactile. She loves a tummy rub, and she’ll lay across my feet any chance she’ll get. Libby’s great with my grandchildren, she’s always calm and doesn’t jump up when people come to the door which is really important behaviour for a guide dog. At puppy classes, everyone is her friend! She loves all the other dogs, but she does have a best friend who’s another golden retriever just two weeks older than her. We take the two out on free runs and they love playing in the woods together.
Good as gold
One of the most pleasing things about being a Puppy Walker is taking your puppy to a public place, and after a while people ‘discovering’ that you’ve got a dog with you that they didn’t notice, because they’re so well behaved! Libby comes with me to town to sit in coffee shops, restaurants and cinemas and doesn’t make any fuss. Later on this year we’re going to the theatre too and I’m sure she’ll behave just as well.
I’m so pleased with the way Libby’s settled in and she’s got such a wonderfully calm personality. In her next Pupdate in February I can’t wait to tell you how she’s getting on as she prepares for early training.
