I'm Neil, Dispensing Optician at Jonathan Hall Opticians, and I grew up in the glasses business.
My dad owned a manufacturing opticians, those are the guys that actually make your glasses. Friends joke that when I joined the queue to study optics in London they thought I was applying for bar work, especially when I told them I’d be working with glasses!
I have had a hugely interesting and varied career as a dispensing optician, spending many years in fast-moving companies around the UK, interacting with thousands of people, gaining the experience and knowledge that make me what I am today.
So the big question is, what does a dispensing optician actually do? Well, so often people tell me they find it difficult finding glasses that really suit them and what they are about. And that’s where I come in. I will work with them to get the look that suits their own personal style and the frame that fits them perfectly.
I love modern eyewear as it is a real statement of a person’s identity, not just a fleeting fashion trend. I am just as passionate about matching glasses, including the choice of lenses, to a person’s lifestyle. What goes well at work doesn’t really go well on a night out or a trip to the gym after all.
At Jonathan Hall Opticians I get to bring together all the learning and practical skills that I have gained over my career. Success for me lies in knowing my job inside & out, in talking to people, finding out exactly what they want and need, then giving them the glasses that meets those needs. I like to make people feel special and I get to do this every day here.
When I’m not at work, you’ll often catch me taking in a cricket match or watching the rugby at CIYMS, a great meeting point for our ever-growing social group. Free-time is precious and I love to eat out at one of the many great restaurants at Ballyhackamore, or relax over a proper coffee on the Belmont Road.
